5 Tools To Help You Not Give Up This Year

It is undeniable that we have all experienced tough times.

Times when it feels like nothing is going our way. Times when it seems everything is falling apart. Those times when we believe it would be easier to give up. I want you to take a moment and imagine if Disney didn’t exist when you were a kid or even now. No Lion King, no Snow White, no Disneyland. That could have been a reality. Walt Disney was fired from his newspaper job because he didn’t have enough creativity and imagination. He failed at different business ventures and was completely broke. He also filed for bankruptcy during his tough times. He however didn’t give up. He continued to pursue his goals and created one of the most recognizable brands and companies in the world. You can also reach all of your goals… if you don’t give up.

Here are a few mental tools that can help you persevere in the face of adversity.

Self Love. In my opinion, the most important thing is self love. I am sure that you have goals that you want to accomplish. Your goals may be professional, social, financial, or physical. All goals come with some form of adversity. It is important to understand that it is going to be harder for you to accomplish your goals if you don’t take care of yourself first. Accomplishing your goals is in fact a part of self love. As the saying goes, you can’t pour out of an empty cup. Love yourself enough to keep going and accomplish what you truly want.

You won’t lose. You are either going to win or you’re going to learn. For example, you may not get the promotion that you want the first time it becomes available. As a result, you can learn different ways of how you can improve to make sure you are not passed up the next time. You will learn what to do better, more of, less of, or what and how to do things differently. Failures always teach us lessons. These lessons will make it more likely for you to succeed in the future.

You are in control. Most battles are mental and you have the power to choose how to respond to those tough and heavy mental times. You may be feeling pressure to hit your targets in the gym or on the scale. When things don’t go as we anticipate that voice might pop into your head and tell you to just give up. Internal pressure can be worse than external pressure. Pressure is an interesting force, it can break pipes or make diamonds. Don’t allow that pressure to break you. Use that pressure of the tough times to help you evolve into the best version of yourself. Remind yourself that nothing great comes easy and keep moving forward.

Do it for those that love you and look up to you. The impact you have on the people around you can be used as a motivating factor. I looked up to my parents when I was a child. My parents worked long hours from the early morning, came home to spend time with us when we got out of school, and then they took turns at night going to night school. They wanted to learn the English language so that they could improve our family life. I saw that and it motivated me to not be afraid of hard work. It is very likely that there is someone looking up to you too.

The person you can impact by not giving up can be a sibling, a parent, a son, a daughter, your significant other, a friend, or anyone else. Use that as fuel and don’t give up.

We all fail. Failures are part of life. I can think of many times that I have failed. Surely your brain is reminding you of at least one time you failed too. Failures have a way to make us feel embarrassed. But why? It’s because we don’t want to be judged or ridiculed. Don’t let the fear of embarrassment hold you back. Accept it and embrace it. It’s better to be embarrassed about trying to accomplish something than it is to feel comfortable in a place you don’t want to really be in.

Not giving up can be one of the most satisfying feelings you will ever have. Difficulty and adversity will stop most people from trying, some from finishing, but only a few won’t allow it to impact them. Remind yourself that you are one of those people that won’t be denied. Imagine that sweet awesome feeling you will have when you finally reach your goal. You’ll be a new, better version of yourself, and you will be equipped to take on a new challenge. All successful people have one thing in common. They never give up. Thomas Edison invented the lightbulb and we don’t care about his hundreds of failed invention attempts. This is your journey and you are stronger than you can even imagine. Never give up. Keep going until you accomplish your own satisfying version of success. You got this.
